Exploring Cork City

Cork has its own unique beauty that can only be witnessed on foot. One can easily get lost but find oneself back where they originally were in a matter of minutes. It is a quite beautiful walk along the waterways of this historic City.

The Northside of the City is quite steep with hills climbing from the riverside. So steep is this side that it is usually compared with San Francisco, but the view is worth the effort. One cannot but notice St. Annes Church Clock tower. The tourists can climb to the top of this Clock tower and ring the historic Shandon Bells as well as viewing the entire City from this landmark position.

Down from this Church is the ancient Butter Exchange, which now hosts the Butter Museum. The Cork Butter Exchange operated between 1770 and 1924 and it exported a half a million butter casks annually and this was worth up to £1.4 million each year. This building also hosts the Shandon Craft Centre.

On the West side of the hill one can glimpse Cork City’s Gaol. This dull 19th Century prison has an audiovisual display as well as other interesting exhibits.

The East side, St. Patrick’s bridge connects the centre with McCurtain St., where one can find a theatre in the Everyman Palace and around here is the main focal point for the famous Cork Jazz Festival

St. Finbars Cathedral can be seen in this part and beside it is remains of an old Elizabeth Fort, dating back to Oliver Cromwell’s time. Lots of pubs in this part of the City with the University Campus up the road, which houses on display a collection of the ancient druid Ogham Stones, which pre-date Stonehenge.

The East side has the City Hall, which is a beautiful building and JF Kennedy made a speech from here in 1963 during his visit. Across the other side of City Hall is the Docks area with small and large vessels anchored nearby, and one can walk along the river down towards Blackrock Castle.
